Summer days can be so much fun for the kiddos. The first few weeks are filled with hustle and bustle of moving from the schoolhouse structure to a more relaxed but fun-filled schedule. This can be such an exciting time for the kids AND the parents! But what happens mid-way thru the season when the “fun” ideas run out and the dreaded B word comes out…. “bored”.
I want to share with you some great ideas that you and the kiddos to enjoy together this summer, as well as some tasty tricks for a quick but balanced lunch! These 5 Super Fun in the Sun Activities take minimal prep and can be fun for kids of all ages. Some are great for especially hot days, and some for those rainy days. Most of all, I guarantee these activities create memories that will carry on to the next summer!
5 Super Fun in the Sun Activities- For Kids!
- Summer Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt is a great way for kids to enjoy the morning hours of a summer day. They can walk around outside and search for all things nature! It will help them get excited about the day because they can wake their minds up by being curious and adventurous. Here is a great printable that you can use! There is no need for prep other than printing this out and letting nature provide the materials.
- Sponge Blast
This game is super fun and also takes minimal prep! You probably even have all the supplies that you would need at home. If not, you can always improvise by using other similar items! All it takes is a water filled bucket and a few sponges per player. (This is a fun activity for you to enjoy too, not just observe!) You can play in teams or individuals depending on how many players you have. Count to 3 and then go crazy soaking the sponges and blasting the other players! This is a great way to stay cool on a hot day, and is a great alternative to squirt guns or water balloons!
- 4 Corners with Chalk
This is a game that we play in our youth group quite often! Depending on the player’s ability to recognize numbers/letters/colors/shapes/etc., you will label 4 corners of a space. When playing outside we use chalk to label the 4 corners on our driveway! Then you decide who will be the “runners” and who will be the “guesser”. All “runners” will choose a corner to run to while the “guesser” has their eyes closed. After the “guesser” counts to 10 they yell out a corner. If there are any “runners” on that corner then they are out! Continue playing until all players are out, and the last one will be the next “guesser”. This is a great way to release energy and you can play as many rounds as you want!
- Nature Yoga
Yoga is a great activity for kids and adults. There are so many perks to starting at a younger age: teaching balance and concentration, encouraging their imagination, learning to relax the body, boost their confidence, and can even help with communication skills. Here is a great sequence of poses to do outdoors while enjoying the nature around you. You can also find many poses online or even at your local library. I want to share with you one of our favorites!
- Pretend to be a seed. All tucked in close to the ground. Slowly start to sprout upwards in the motions that a small seedling would start to grow. When you start to slowly sprout, arch your back and stretch your lower back gently.
- Continue to grow showing the stages of what a small growing tree would look like. Stretching your arms up to the sun.
- Show your tree branches by stretching your arms up and to the sides. You can even sway your branches from side to side allowing the sides of your body to stretch gently.
- Allow the body to flow into the Tree Pose by standing on one leg while the other is balanced on your inner thigh. Use your posture to help with balance as you bring your hands up to the sky and touch palms above your head. You can even sway your body from the waist up side to side.
Remember to control your breathing and enjoy the surrounding environment. The more you practice different poses with your children the more confident they will feel. In time you will surly start to see the positive perks to having yoga in your routine.
- Picnic Lunch
A picnic lunch can be pre-prepped and fast cooking! This will help you keep a balanced nutrition during the summer months AND will also allow your kids to get back out and play in a jiffy. Who wants to be spending all afternoon creating lunches for the kids when you would all rather be outside enjoying the summer weather? The best part is the kids will get a kick out of eating outside!
On many occasions we like to enjoy TysonⓇ Chicken Nuggets, State FairⓇ Mini Corn Dogs, a kid friendly pasta salad, with some fruit on the side! These Tyson® products are great for the kids because they create a balanced meal, high in protein, that the kids enjoy and takes very low effort.
Another great perk about Tyson is they are offering a promotion right now that if you purchase two of their participating products: Tyson®, Ball Park®, State Fair®, or Jimmy Dean® at your local Walmart, take a simple picture of your receipt, and then you receive a movie ticket to go on a rainy day and enjoy a new upcoming film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in theaters now!!
Here is where I found the participating products in my local Walmart!
If you are looking for an easy kid friendly side to share the plate with, here is a colorful Kid Friendly Pasta Salad for them to enjoy! This is something that you can prep at the beginning of the week and then pull out to enjoy for a few days. Again, something simple and quick so you can be in and out in a flash!
